The Government of Canada is joining NordForsk’s international research initiative on Sustainable Development of the Arctic with research funding organizations from Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the United States. Nordforsk is an organization that funds and coordinates Nordic research cooperation. The initiative will leverage international expertise that will contribute to new knowledge for the sustainable development of the Arctic. It will also address needs unique to this region, which has undergone rapid changes with far-reaching consequences.
This initiative aligns with the Government of Canada’s Arctic and Northern Policy Framework. Through interdisciplinary research projects that include Indigenous perspectives, this initiative will leverage expertise across Arctic countries to explore approaches to sustainable development in the Arctic, considering aspects such as security, natural resources and societal changes.
The Canada Research Coordinating Committee has committed up to $20 million over four years to this call. It will be administered by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council on behalf of Canada's three federal research funding agencies, through the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF).
The NFRF program, launched in 2018, seeks to inspire innovative, high-risk, high-reward, interdisciplinary research projects that push boundaries, explore exciting new areas and have the potential to enhance Canada’s competitiveness and expertise in the global, knowledge-based economy.
