Over the past decade important advancements have been made in the development of new technologies designed to enhance FEW production. For example, in the context of food, hydroponic systems, agridome facilities, innovative greenhouse design\instrumentation, and computer-controlled LED lighting systems have been developed for year-round fruit and vegetable production. These technologies have great potential for alleviating food insecurity by providing a source of healthy and affordable foods for Arctic communities. Similar advances have been made in energy and water technologies. However, it has yet to be determined what constraints may exist that would limit local adoption and scaling-out of these new technologies. Research conducted outside of the Arctic has long found that despite the great potential for FEW technologies, there are often unforeseen cultural, economic, political and policy constraints that limit technological uptake. In this research the PDF we will examine the innovations being made in FEW t e c h n o l o g i e s i n t h e C a n a d i a n A r c t i c , identify the constraints that may hinder adoption, and arrive at strategies that can enhance uptake leading to scaled-out opportunities.
The candidate will be expected help lead qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, develop and deliver manuscripts and presentations, engage in community-based research, and co-write external grant proposals. The candidate will not be expected to teach.
Qualifications: A PhD in a social science is required, as is experience working in northern regions. The candidate will be expected to work independently and also function effectively in a team setting. Periodic travel to Arctic communities will be required. Experience working with Indigenous communities is a considerable an asset.
