CoastGIS is a biennial series of symposia that brings together practitioners and researchers in the field of marine and coastal Geographic Information Systems, remote sensing and computer cartography. It is an established major international coastal and marine event attracting delegates from around the globe.

The conference theme "Spatial Planning and Climate Change" refers to the challenges faced worldwide in light of climate change, particularly in the Arctic. Also emphasis will be on cooperation in spatial planning between countries.

The conference will take place at The University Centre of The Westfjords, located in downtown Ísafjörður.

In the weeks to come more and detailed information will be added to this conference web site.

First call for participation and program content:

In this time of rapid climate change there is an increasing need for tools to facilitate integrated planning approaches. Spatial planning is crucial to ensuring effective management and governance of coastal areas including supporting resilience and adaptation to the impacts of climate change. Geographic information plays an increasingly vital role in planning the coastal zone.

The conference invites you to submit your contribution related to the following themes, but not restricted to them:

  • Climate change impacts and adaptation of coastal settlements
  • GIS technology, remote sensing and spatial analysis in coastal zone management
  • Mapping and modelling ecosystem services in the coastal zone
  • Coastal vulnerability assessment – strategies for mitigation and adaptation
  • GIS applications for fisheries and coastal resources management
  • Data on demographic and social changes in coastal settlements
  • Decision support for marine spatial planning and management
  • Mapping, monitoring, modelling coastal environments

The conference is calling papers for oral presentation, posters and suggestions for panel-sessions. They also welcome ideas for side-meetings that can be arranged in conjunction with the conference. The call for contributions will be open until 30 April 2018.
