An article, Comparison of nutrient concentrations in leaves of five plants will be published in Journal of Plant Nutrition

This scientific publication is a direct result of a new collaboration emerging from the thematic network. Authors are Irina Shtangeeva, St. Petersburg University, Solomon Tesfalidet, Umeå University and Lars Lövgren, Umeå University. The paper is related to remediation of polluted soils by using plants and describes bioaccumulation of mineral elements in leaves of five native plant species.

Ecological Strategy of Mining Industry Conference in Murmansk, Russia

Members of the thematic network participated in the conference Ecological Strategy of Mining Industry – Formation of the New Worldview in Mineral Resources Development, which was arranged in Apatity, Murmansk oblast, Russia 13-15 October 2014. The conference was an All-Russian scientific conference with international speakers invited. Pernille Erland Jensen, Centre of Arctic Technology, Danish Technical University and Lars Lövgren, Umeå University, Sweden presented their research and the scope of the thematic network. Another network partner presenting was Dr. Svetlana Mesyats, who is a leading scientists at Mining Institute, Apatity. She presented an Ecological strategy of the mining industry. In total approximately 60 technical and scientific presentations were given. During day 3 a field trip to a recently opened apatite mine was organised.

After the conference was closed Pernille Erland Jiensen and Lars Lövgren met with the management of the Mining Institute and some of the researchers sharing the interests of the thematic network. Possibilities for future joint activities, above all joint research projects, was discussed. A memorandum of understanding between the UArctic thematic network and the Mining Institute was signed by Dr. Nikolay Melnikov, Head of Mining Institue and Lars Lövgren representing the thematic network.

Strategic Assessment of Development of the Arctic

On September 11th a document of a potentially great significance for our thematic network was released in Brussels at the seminar The EU in the Arctic, the Arctic in the EU. The report Strategic Assessment of Development of the Arctic: Assessment Conducted for the European Union was prepared through contributions from 19 universities and research and communication centers in the Arctic. The project was led by the University of Lapland.

“The ‘Strategic Assessment of Development of the Arctic: Assessment Conducted for the European Union” report considers the trends and developments taking place in the European Arctic today. That includes a view to 2030, with an emphasis on the uncertainties. The analysis has been conducted on the basis of seven themes focused on change. The implications of Arctic changes for the European Union as well as the role of EU policies and actions in the Arctic are examined.” (http://www.arcticinfo.eu/en/)
