Russian State Hydrometeorological University

RSHU is the oldest and only higher educational institution of hydrometeorological profile in Russia, one of the leading universities in Russia for the training of highly qualified personnel in the field of hydrometeorology, ecology, information technologies, management and polar law.

The strategic goal of the University is to strengthen the position of the University, focused on professional training in hydrometeorology, ecology and environmental management, marine engineering research, geoecology, economic meteorology, marine information systems and information security, including specialized training for the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, integration into the international educational space, entry among the leaders in research and development in promising areas of science and technology development.

In 1994 the Russian State Hydrometeorological Institute received international recognition. An agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the World Meteorological Organization gave the university the status of the WMO Regional Meteorological Training Centre.

In 2015 RSHU merged with the State Polar Academy that was established to enroll students from the Arctic regions and promote Arctic social studies and humanities. Since then, one of the key RSHU priorities has been to enhance collaboration between natural and social scientists with the strong focus on the Arctic region and Arctic peoples. Contributing to the Polar Academy’s mission, RSHU strongly supports Arctic research on preservation and development of the indigenous peoples’ culture and traditions.
